IBDP English A: Language and Literature
In this course, students study a wide range of literary and non-literary texts in a variety of media. By examining communicative acts across literary form and textual type alongside appropriate secondary readings, students will investigate the nature of language itself and the ways in which it shapes and is influenced by identity and culture. Approaches to study in the course are meant to be wide ranging and can include literary theory, sociolinguistics, media studies and critical discourse analysis among others.

While knowledge and understanding carry 10 marks for Criterion A, Criterion B carries equal marks (10) for the skill of evaluating and interpreting the literary devices and text specific devices for graphic novels. However, many students focus little to less on this aspect. Though some students carry good knowledge of the literary features, they do not effectively explain and blend it in the explanation of your thesis. It is important that you get rewarded more for this criterion from the examiners to get 6 or 7. This module focuses on two aspects. First, it is the list of 80+ literary devices that are important in dramas, novels and graphic novels. Second, we train you and enhance the skills of incorporating these features in the essay writing at two levels- explicit and implicit. In this module, we demonstrate how to achieve it in writing and you will learn the way to make your writing more literary in style.
