Theory of knowledge (TOK) explores questions about knowledge and the process of knowing. TOK emphasizes comparisons and connections between areas of knowledge and encourages students to become more aware of their own perspectives and the perspectives of others.

This module prepares you in the concepts that become key concepts of TOK in IBDP. The module also develops your understanding and enhances your skills required for TOK presentations (2021), exhibition (2022) and TOK Essay. This module covers the following topics and concepts of understanding and skills for assessments in the core component.

  • Knowledge and the knower – Core theme
  • Optional Themes: Any two – knowledge and technology; knowledge and language; knowledge and politics; knowledge and religion; and knowledge and indigenous societies.
  • TOK 12 concepts of TOK course: evidence, certainty, truth, interpretation, power, justification, explanation, objectivity, perspective, culture, values and responsibility.
  • Areas of Knowledge (AOKs): History, Human Sciences, Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Arts
  • Knowledge Frameworks: scope, perspectives, methods and tools, and ethics.
  • Knowledge Questions (KQs) and relationship around the world
  • Ethics across AOKs
  • TOK terms and language
  • Convincing arguments in TOK discussions
  • Significance of authentic examples
  • Successful approaches to TOK Presentation (2021)
  • Successful approaches to TOK Exhibition (2022)

The TOK exhibition explores how TOK manifests in the world around us. Students need to base their exhibition on one of the TOK themes (either the core theme or one of the optional themes). See module 1 for details of themes and optional themes. This is an internally assessed component. Students are required to create an exhibition comprising three objects, or images of objects, and an accompanying written commentary on each object. To be successful in this core component, we guide you in the following process:

  • Discussion and choosing a TOK IA prompt 
  • Choosing three objects or images of objects
  • Connecting to one of the themes (see module 1)
  • Connecting to real-world context
  • Written commentary on each object – 950 words
  • Discussion and planning of the commentary
  • Comment on your each draft til you get it right

The IB releases a set of six prescribed titles for each examination session. Looking at the titles, the students find a complex situation of choosing the right title to write an effective essay. Considering this complex process, we provide you total guidance in the process of writing a TOK Essay. This is an externally assessed component.  We guide you in the following process: 

  • Discussion on six titles
  • Choosing the right title 
  • Unpacking or Exploration of the chosen the title
  • Outline of the essay: Planning and Progress Form
  • Significance of the examples: How authentic?
  • Line of argument and focus on the title
  • Different perspectives that matter in TOK essay
  • Essay structure and simplicity of language in TOK essay 
  • Demonstration of the essay structure using A grade sample
  • What is global impression marking in TOK?
  • Understanding the assessment instrument 
  • Guide you on the required research
  • Guide you on the essay content to begin writing the essay
  • Comment on your each draft til you get it right

If you have attempted writing a TOK Essay, a good feedback will help you to improve it further. Our team of assessors would mark it and give feedback in three areas: strengths and weaknesses and suggestions for improvements (200 words). If you would like to know the areas to improve, send us the copy, we shall send the feedback in 48 hours. If you would like to receive feedback orally, we shall schedule an interactive session online. Remember – you do not need to worry. Your essay will be safe with us!
