IB Diploma French B

Language B in IB Diploma is a language acquisition course designed for students with some previous experience of the target language. In the language B course, students further develop their ability to communicate in the target language through the study of language, themes and texts. In doing so, they also develop conceptual understandings of how language works, as appropriate to the level of the course. The student is expected to develop receptive, productive and interactive skills in the course working on five themes: identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organization, and sharing the planet.The themes allow students to compare the target language and culture(s) to other languages and cultures with which they are familiar. In this language B course, students work with the texts such as written, visual, audio and audio-visual texts into three broad categories: personal, professional and mass media texts.

Personal Texts: blog, diary, email, personal letter,  and social media posting/chat room
Professional Texts: blog, email, essay, formal letter, proposal, questionnaire, report, set of instructions and survey.
Mass media texts: advertisement, article (newspaper, magazine), blog, brochure, film, interview, leaflet, literature*, news report, opinion column/editorial, pamphlet, podcast, poster, public commentary (editorial/readers’ letters) radio programme, review, speech, travel guide and web page.

Focus on LSRW Skills – Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing: This module focuses on introducing themselves. Identify where French is spoken. Learn the French alphabet and pronunciation. Express feelings and inquire how other people are feeling (adjectives). Learn numbers 1-100. Greetings and salutations. Talk about their age and ask about friend’s ages. Ask questions and exchange information about family and pets with a friend, using adjectives correctly. Ask about someone’s family, ask and give information about people. Use of personal pronouns je, tu, il/elle/vous etc. and introduction to articles. The language acquisition, productive, receptive and interactive skills developed in this module can be applied for exam components: Paper 1 (writing), Paper 2 (reading and listening) and individual oral assessment.

  • Identify masculine and feminine words and use right words for he, she and it.
  • Talk about what they like, dislike and prefer.
  • Frame sentences using the verbs ‘Être and Avoir’.
  • Read and understand paragraphs on personal description and preferences.

Focus on LSRW Skills – Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing: This module focuses on French and other Francophone food and restaurant traditions, superlatives, DEJEUNER, GOÛTER, DÎNER AND DEMANDER in the present tense, subject-adjective agreement, and a review of the verb AIMER and ADORER. The language acquisition, productive, receptive and interactive skills developed in this module can be applied for exam components: Paper 1 (writing), Paper 2 (reading and listening) and individual oral assessment.

  • Talk about meals and eating habits.
  • Discussing healthy eating, healthy lifestyles and general fitness.
  • Shopping for food, beverages for breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Exchanging opinions about fast food and healthy food.

Focus on LSRW Skills – Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing: In this module students learn describing parts of the body and a pain or injury. Describing an accident and understanding warning signs. Talking about personal feelings and problems. Talking about smoking and addiction issues. Comparing healthy and unhealthy lifestyles. Going to the doctor or dentist. Talk to and understand the doctor or dentist. Listen and understand, explanation of what is done to stay fit. Health advantages of different sports. Give and understand details of an accident. Describe what people or things are like, discuss food, health, and exercise choices and understand cultural perspectives on diet and health. conversations in the chemist shop and at doctor’s Buy basic medical supplies, ask for and understand the advice of the Doctor. Focus on LSRW Skills – Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing: Students learn to talk about different situations like transportation, directions, and locations etc. The language acquisition, productive, receptive and interactive skills developed in this module can be applied for exam components: Paper 1 (writing), Paper 2 (reading and listening) and individual oral assessment.

  • Talk about different forms of transport
  • Describe an event in the past – journey, situation, etc
  • Understand traffic and road information -breakdowns, delays, etc
  • Talk about travel issues in cities and public transport
  • Give and seek information about rail travel, an accident and air travel
  • Arrange to meet up with someone using vocabulary related to time phrases, places, occasions, prepositions, transport and verbs such as ‘vouloir, pouvoir, devoir/il faut…’

Discuss advantages and disadvantages of the Internet. They will also be able to communicate effectively, listen, read and respond to stimulus material and may produce creative pieces in speech and writing on topics. The language acquisition, productive, receptive and interactive skills developed in this module can be applied for exam components: Paper 1 (writing), Paper 2 (reading and listening) and individual oral assessment.

  • Identify and use vocabulary related to technology
  • Seek and provide personal information
  • State what is happening right now
  • Talk about the present, past and future
  • Express negation or disagreement
  • Gain further understanding of object pronouns

Focus on LSRW Skills – Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing: In this module students learn to define ‘neighborhood’, list the characteristics of a desirable neighborhood, distinguish between a neighborhood, community, place of living and people. Students research and speak about their town/village and highlight aspects of its local culture such as population, coat of arms, village feast and other local celebrations; and prepare a mural, individually or working with others, and to summarise all the findings. The language acquisition, productive, receptive and interactive skills developed in this module can be applied for exam components: Paper 1 (writing), Paper 2 (reading and listening) and individual oral assessment.

Also ask and answer a few questions like:

Focus on LSRW Skills – Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing: In this module, students learn about poverty, homelessness, unemployment and discrimination and social issues of least one Francophone country. For example, drug issues and related discussion questions as below. The language acquisition, productive, receptive and interactive skills developed in this module can be applied for exam components: Paper 1 (writing), Paper 2 (reading and listening) and individual oral assessment.

  • Why are drugs such a big social problem?
  • Opinion of students on why youth is taking drugs and the reasons?
  • What could be done by the government to stop the problem in the future?
  • What can a student do in school to try to help stop the problem in the future?

Students also develop understanding of these issues and practice translation, reading and listening skills on changes in modern and traditional values, cyberbullying, influence of social media, equal rights, the equality of the sexes, machismo and feminism etc.

This module prepares students focused on final exam preparation. We take you through some exam skills, tips, techniques, approaches that enhance your skill and understanding to earn a high grade point. We will revise key themes, concepts and areas of the syllabus and prepare you through planned assignments.
